Lesson 2: Library Research
This lesson will take place in the library. Groups and topics will be chosen for the documentary. Students will use computers and books to research their specific topic each group will explore in their documentary.
Students will complete individual worksheets on their topic.
Lesson 3: Information Report
Students will look at a range of texts and choose which fit into the genre Information Report.
Teacher will discuss social purpose and elements of Information Report.
Model Information Report through writing a text on the school. Concentrate on schematic structure, audience and purpose.
Teacher discusses grammatical features of a Information Report using example texts.
Lesson 4: Information Report 2
Joint writing on one aspect of Egypt (e.g Pharaohs).
Students will work in their documentary groups to draft their Information Report. Student will outline their text and allocate sections for each student to complete. Students will be encouraged to use headings (e.g. food, fashion, environment, and politics).
Lesson 5: Oral presentations with drama links
Students learn about appropriate oral presentation skills necessary for the documentary (relating to English outcomes).
Addresses technical/formal language versus colloquial/everyday language. Looks at connecting with a specific audience.
Students engage in drama task where they are encouraged to enact a documentary-style scene. Activities include role walk and hot seating.
Lesson 6: Visual Grammar
Students will examine features of relevant visual texts. Students will look at diagrams, photographs, maps, charts and timelines.
Students will work in groups to design and annotate various relevant visual texts.
Students will select visual text types most relevant to their documentary.
Lesson 7: Exploring JayCut
Teacher shows multi-modal text videos.
On Smart Board, teacher will model basic elements of JayCut.
Half of the class will work in pairs to experiment with JayCut while the other students will work outside with the video cameras.
Lesson 8: Story Board & Scripts
Students will compare and contrast two video clips- documentary (BTN) and narrative film (Prince of Egypt).
Students identify the key features of a documentary (presenter, factual images, re-enactments)
Teacher will show examples of storyboards and create a storyboard as a class.
Students will take their Information Report and using the story board worksheet design a story board for their documentary on butcher’s paper.
Students will be provided with a checklist of elements that need to be included in their documentary.
Lesson 9: Filming
Students will work in their groups to film the necessary scenes for the documentary with assistance from the teacher.
Students are encouraged to bring in costumes and props. Students can film in the classroom or in the playground.
One group will be filming at a time with the teacher, while the other groups are practicing, finding images, or preparing costumes and props.
Lesson 10: Jay Cut
Students will use their storyboard to guide their documentary on Jay Cut.
Students will use images they have found on the internet, video they have made and audio to design their documentary.
This lesson can be extended into recess for completion.
